Hey Dr. Nagler,

I have been diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer and will start receiving the platinum drugs cisplatin and carboplatin.on Thursday as my chemo regimen.  My doc is doing 18 weekly treatments--very aggressive.  I am trying to be brave but I am very afraid that my tinnitus will become intolerable.  I have no choice--these are the best drugs for my situation.  My gyno-oncologyst said he can keep me around another few years (maybe even more) if they can get the cancer to go into remission in six months.

There is no reliable screening for OC --it's also usually missed on yearly exams-- that's why it's so deadly--it's usually advanced by the time symptoms appear. Please remind all the women in your circle.

take care,
kat

Oh kat, how I hate to hear this. You are one of my true all-time tinnitus heroes. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you as you face this next challenge. If there is anything that I can do to help in any way, you have only to ask.

Fondly -

stephen

Thank you for your kind words and offer to help.  You help just by being here.  I didn't want to "report" in until I had some positive news. I am half way through and I am responding very well to the treatment and my prognosis looks much better. My tinnitus seems to have gotten a bit louder and I don't get the 'low' days anymore but that can be my anxiety level as well as the drugs.  I do notice that it drops to baseline occasionally so I am hopeful that once I through my tinnitus will go back to where it was before iv cancer drugs and antibiotics. My oncologist told me it is often the case.  If not, well, I didn't have a choice and I am living ok with the new loudness.  I habituated much faster than I did to my original tinnitus.

I am working three days a week.  My doc let me try because I have my own office and can keep people with colds out.  :)  They haven't had anyone work on the weeking regimen so I am hoping to be the first.

Thanks again for being there and please remember to tell all the women in your family to have ct imaging done...it's the only way that OC can definitely be found.  They miss it all the time on examination.

Warmest wishes,

kat

So, kat, now you are not only one of my all-time tinnitus heroes; you are an ovarian cancer hero as well.

I am so glad that you are doing well, and I continue to wish you the very best.
