Hello Dr Nagler ,

I am going through a pretty bad spike with random ear pain that comes and goes in the ear where my tinnitus is , like they stick a needle in it , it is really odd and disconcerning .

It started after I used in-ear earbuds for 2 days at work , needed them for a consultation,  both days I used them for about an hour or 5 straight  , it was just normal voice conversation with no music or anything else , the volume was at a minimum, definatly lower than you would have a normal conversation from person to person .

I am not even sure how or why this is happening , did I risk making my tinnitus permanently worse using the in-ear buds, what is going on here ?

Thanks for any insight you can offer .

Hello Bart -

There is no way that the use of earbuds at the volume you describe above could possibly have caused any damage to your auditory system. And that being the case, I suspect that the spike and random ear pain will settle down given a bit of time. Might want to see an ENT just to make sure nothing unusual is going on if the discomfort lasts more than a couple of weeks. That's what I would do if I were in your shoes, anyway.

All the best with it.
