Jack, I am not aware of any correlation. You are 76 and still going strong, yes? So even if there were a correlation, I'd never tell you about it! :-)

All the best -

Jack, I am sorry but I was unable to determine from your post exactly why you started taking milk thistle in the first place. Please be kind enough to explain what you were seeking to achieve.

Thank you.

The reason I started to take Milk Thistle was that an educated friend said it was a good way to clean out your liver.Although I don't drink or smoke and work out reguarly I do take medicines and many vitamins and herbs. I also try to eat a pretty good diet most of the time. I thought it would be beneficial to my well being but my tinnitus started to act up and wanted to know if you had heard of this before with people using MILK THISTLE. Thanks again for addressing my concern

Thank you for clarifying, Jack.

You know, usually I’m the one who gives the answers here so that others might learn from my knowledge, experience, and - yes - mistakes. But if you don’t mind, I would like to ask you a question so that I myself can learn something, OK?

You posted that you take milk thistle because you heard it was a good way to clean out your liver. Well, I confess that up until you started this thread I had never actually heard of milk thistle - so I did a little research and also checked out a number of the milk thistle preparations on-line. Turns out that if you look closely enough at the packaging, inserts, etc., in each case the bottle comes with the following disclaimer: “This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or condition.” So here’s what I would like to know, Jack. You seem like a bright, responsible, and health-conscious sort of fellow. That being the case, why would you ingest a product for the purpose of cleaning out your liver knowing that the manufacturer of that product states that it is not intended to do that which you want it to do? I mean no disrespect, but to me that’s like buying a swimsuit for the purpose of flying from Atlanta to Kansas City. I just don’t get it, and I’d really appreciate it if you would help me understand the thinking there, because it seems that a number of people take milk thistle for the same reason you do!

Oh, and as to your question, best I can determine milk thistle has no adverse effect on tinnitus. Of course, I have no idea about the effect on tinnitus of whatever impurities might be in the bottle along with the milk thistle (the supplement industry is not subject to the same level of strict FDA controls as is the pharmaceutical industry), but milk thistle itself seems relatively benign in that regard.

I hope that helps a bit - but please do go to the second paragraph above this one, and enlighten me.

Thanks so much.

Thanks dr. Nadler for taking the time to stay with my Milk Thistle topic a friend whos a counselor recommended since I have taking a lot of herbs, medicines and sleeping pills to sleep that I tried it. taking your suggestion ive stopped it for now. after 40 yrs . of coping my ears are worsened now with my good ear right getting worse. I also started taking Dr. Gundry vital reds not sure if that's affecting.  I considering trying hearing aids with masking features but concerned that my ears are affected by noise if they would get worse. cant go to plays, movies fly etc, im an x football player and spinal surgery few years back or old age might be affecting them. would love to have telephone appointment to discuss. I have medicare and nys empire coverage since I was a teacher coach adm. for close to 50 yrs. thanks once again for your concern for tinnitus suffers.

Well, since coping with your tinnitus has not gotten you where you want to be, then maybe you should consider changing strategies? Why not work on habituating your tinnitus - so you won't have to cope with it at all! Perhaps start with the basics, and try to identify and address your Barriers to Habituation.

And while you are at it, please think about why it is that you are not going to plays or movies. In other words, think about whether or not depriving yourself of some of the enjoyment of life over the years while introducing all manner of impurities into your system via a long line of supplements has accomplished anything. There's an inexpensive little paperback about supplements that you might find to be quite revealing entitled Do You Believe in Magic? by Paul Offit. I strongly recommend it.
