B.W. asked:

Dr. Nagler, I have heard that there is an association between tinnitus and thyroid conditions. What is your opinion?

Tinnitus has been occasionally associated with underactive thyroid conditions, overactive thyroid conditions, inflammatory thyroid conditions, and autoimmune thyroid conditions. But I am not aware of a single case wherein correction of a thyroid abnormality has resulted in resolution of tinnitus. Strictly from a pragmatic standpoint, therefore, I believe that individuals with unexplained tinnitus of more than two months' duration should undergo a routine battery of thyroid function tests and should have any abnormalities discovered as a result of that testing addressed as a matter of general health rather than in the hopes that in so doing their tinnitus will improve.
